Lunch in Manhattan Beach is a competitive sport, and I’ve eaten my way through enough of it to know exactly where the lines are drawn. One day you’re fighting for a seat at SUGARFISH, dropping sixty bucks on an omakase that disappears in four bites; the next, you’re at Ercole’s, sliding a twenty to a bartender for a burger that will ruin every other burger for you.

This town runs on that delicious hypocrisy, from rib meat tacos to lobster pad Thai, and my cardiologist has officially given up. So here’s the map for your midday hunger, you’ll find it all below.

Highlights
Warm tortillas, three salsas
Rib meat tacos, richly flavored
Relaxed vibe, attentive service
Flan and fried ice cream
Bar stocked, all the goods

I went to Esperanza expecting a quick bite and instead found myself in a holding pattern of pure indulgence. The warm tortillas arrived with three salsas, each one more opinionated than the last, and I let them argue over my rib meat tacos. Those tacos are richly flavored, the kind of messy honesty that makes you forgive every overpriced taco truck you have ever known. The vibe is relaxed, the service attentive without hovering, and the bar is stocked with all the goods, which I appreciated because lunch is just a suggestion. I finished with flan and fried ice cream, feeling like a traitor to my diet. I would do it again. That is the problem.

Tasty breakfast skillet offerings
Great seating for remote work
Coffee and drinks worth revisiting

Sloopy's is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bother with more complicated plans. The food is fast, fresh, and high quality, which sounds like a corporate slogan and then actually delivers. I had a breakfast skillet that made me forget I was eating lunch, and the staff were friendly and attentive, which is rare when the place is busy and everyone wants their coffee refill at the same time. I also noticed the seating is great for remote work, so I plugged in my laptop and pretended I was being productive while sipping a coffee worth revisiting. The drinks are good. The guilt is mild. That is a win.

Manager Cal Clarke shines
Impeccable, anticipated service throughout
Pizza crust earns chef kisses
Pillowy-soft fungi gnocchi
Lively, sultry bar seating

Love & Salt knows how to put on a show, and the manager, Cal Clarke, is the ringmaster. Every moment of service was impeccable and anticipated, which honestly made me suspicious at first. I am not used to being watched that closely unless I am doing something wrong. The pizza crust deserves chef kisses, and I gave it several of my own, much to the embarrassment of my dining companion. The fungi gnocchi was pillowy-soft, a texture so indulgent it feels like a secret. The bar seating is lively and sultry, if you can find a spot, and I recommend you do. Just be ready to talk about the food for days. I still am.

Best burger in South Bay
Authentic old-school dive bar
Friendly bartenders, welcoming locals
Cash only, come prepared
Pool tables and relaxed vibes

Ercole's is not trying to impress anyone, and that is precisely why it succeeds. The burger is the best in South Bay, and I say that as someone who has eaten more burgers than my cardiologist would approve. It is an authentic old-school dive bar with friendly bartenders and welcoming locals who will absolutely judge you if you order a salad. The fries are fine, but the burger is the reason. It is cash only, so come prepared, because the ATM machine will take a fee and then laugh at you. There are pool tables and relaxed vibes, and I spent an hour pretending I could play pool. I could not. I did not care.

Highlights
Tasty tortilla soup
Great for group meetups
Perfect warm-day beer pairing
Light and filling dessert

Urban Plates is the lunch equivalent of a warm hug from someone you do not entirely trust but enjoy anyway. The tortilla soup is tasty, which is a relief because I have had tortilla soup that tasted like regret. It is great for group meetups, since everyone can pick their own plates and then fight over the communal table. On a warm day, I paired my soup with a cold beer, and that pairing was perfect, kind of like a summer afternoon that does not overstay its welcome. I finished with a light and filling dessert, which is an oxymoron that somehow works. I left satisfied and only slightly skeptical about my life choices.

Quick, healthy lunch under $20

Reliable quality on pickup orders
Welcome regulars like old friends

Health Nut is where I go when I want to feel virtuous without actually trying. Kelly, who works there, is friendly and consistent, and she remembers my order, which is both flattering and alarming because it means I come here too often. The lunch is quick and healthy, and it comes in under twenty dollars, which feels like a miracle in this town. Their loyalty program earns me free favorites, and yes, I have worked the system. The pickup orders are always reliable, which matters when you are hungry and impatient. They welcome regulars like old friends, which is rare and genuine. I ate a salad and felt like a better person. It lasted until dinner.

Highlights
Bread that steals the show
Every sandwich, zero misses
Shaved roast beef with horseradish
Veggie-packed tuna salad
Worth the fresh wait

Bread Head is a place where the bread steals the show, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Every sandwich I have tried has been zero misses, which is statistically improbable and yet here we are. The shaved roast beef with horseradish is a masterpiece of savory aggression, and the horseradish will clear your sinuses and possibly your social calendar. The veggie-packed tuna salad is surprisingly good, even for someone who usually regards tuna with suspicion. The wait is worth it, because they make the bread fresh, and I watched a grown man nearly weep over a roll. I get it. The bread gets you. I left with a bag of it and no regrets.

Highlights
Amazing hummus and chimichurri steak
Great Hazy IPA selection
Pleasant outdoor seating vibe
Tasty bee pollen cocktail
Unforgettably surreal steak argument

Nomad Eatery is where lunch turned into a small theater production. The hummus is amazing, and the chimichurri steak is even better, but the real show was the argument at the table next to me. It was surreal, the way two people can fight about the correct way to eat a steak while the steak itself sits there, unbothered. The Hazy IPA selection is great, so I drank something cold and hoppy and pretended I was not listening. The bee pollen cocktail is tasty, though I am still unsure what bee pollen does besides sound expensive. The outdoor seating has a pleasant vibe, and I ordered another drink to avoid going home. I went home eventually. The steak argument is still echoing.

Authentic flavors, interesting dishes
Popular lobster pad Thai
Vegetarian adjustments made perfectly
Beautiful Penang curry color
Delicious Tom yum soup

Nawa Thai serves the kind of food that makes you feel like you have been teleported somewhere better. The flavors are authentic and interesting, which is a polite way of saying they do not dumb it down for the neighborhood. The lobster pad Thai is popular, and I understand why, though I was more obsessed with the Penang curry. That color. It is beautiful, like a sunset you can eat with a spoon. The tom yum soup is delicious, tangy and hot, and it made me sweat in a way that felt honest. I asked for vegetarian adjustments, and they made them perfectly, which is rare and worth noting. I left full and slightly emotional.

Half Jidori Chicken standout
Warm, welcoming hospitality remembered
Dorado and pear dessert
Open kitchen adds lively chaos
Exceptional beef tongue preparation

Vin Folk is the kind of place that makes you want to become a regular even if you live nowhere nearby. The half Jidori chicken is a standout, crispy on the outside and tender within, and I ordered it twice because I do not believe in moderation. The beef tongue preparation is exceptional, which is a sentence I never thought I would write, but here we are. The hospitality is warm and welcoming, and I remembered the name of the server because she remembered mine. The open kitchen adds a lively chaos, and I watched a chef flip something while singing. The dorado and pear dessert is strange and wonderful, like a dream about fish and fruit. I left confused and happy.

Steak cooked very nicely
Attentive, helpful hotel staff
Waffles and eggs delicious
Great remote work spot
Unique book-style check presentation

Second Story is the sort of place you stumble into and then never want to leave. The steak is cooked very nicely, which sounds like faint praise until you remember how often steak is ruined. The waffles and eggs are delicious, and I had them for lunch, which is a decision I stand by completely. The staff are attentive and helpful, and they work for the hotel, so they have that professional calm that comes from dealing with tourists. It is also a great spot for remote work, because the tables are big and the wifi is steady. I paid my check, and it came in a book-style presentation, which is odd but charming. I tipped extra for the theater.

Fresh fish, perfect rice
Trust-me omakase takes over
Clean, minimal, always reliable
Friendly staff, tidy room
Sixty bucks, fully satisfying

SUGARFISH is the lunch equivalent of a controlled substance, and I say that with love. The fish is fresh, the rice is perfect, and the trust-me omakase takes over your meal with a quiet authority that I respect. I did not have to make a single decision, and that was the best part. The room is clean and minimal, and the staff are friendly, though they do not hover. It is reliable in the way that a well-oiled machine is reliable, and I appreciate that in a world of surprises. Sixty bucks later, I was fully satisfied and slightly ashamed at how quickly it disappeared. I would do it again tomorrow. I probably will.
